A CVR number is the unique identification number assigned to all companies in Denmark when they are registered in Det Centrale Virksomhedsregister (CVR). The CVR functions as the company’s “CPR number” and is used to identify the company in relation to tax, VAT, accounts and trade.
Structure
The CVR number consists of 8 digits. Example: 12345678. The number is assigned chronologically, which means newer companies get higher numbers than older ones.
Purpose
- Ensure unambiguous identification of companies.
- To make it easier for authorities to register and monitor companies.
- To create transparency for customers, partners and suppliers.
Where do you find a CVR number?
You can find a company’s CVR number on its website, in email signatures, on invoices or by searching directly in the CVR register. According to legislation, companies must always state their CVR number in business communications.
CVR and P number
A company may have multiple departments or production units. Each unit is assigned a P number (production unit number), which is linked to the company’s CVR number. This makes it possible to distinguish between the head office and different branches.
Practical significance
The CVR number is used in many contexts:
- When reporting tax and VAT.
- In connection with public tenders and contracts.
- As identification when setting up business accounts with banks.
- In CRM systems and ERP systems to keep track of customers and suppliers.
